In TDC the 1st,2nd and 3rd pushrods from the water pump end of the engine will be loose. It should make smoke and maybe even backfire if its 180 off. Try choking it while cranking, hold a heavy piece of cardboard partially over the turbo inlet. and dont let the turbo eat your fingers.

The V Marland talks about is probably TDC. I'm thinkin may be he should check the other end, may be there are timing marks on the fly wheel.

that V with a line is on the flywheel . If I can't get results flipping the inj pump 180 , I'm going to be forced to pull the clutch housing and polishing up the rusty patch about 1/3rd of the way around the flywheel so I can see if there are any marks on it there.

The flywheel marks a very easy to see. I'm betting they are buried under the paint on the damper, could be wrong, shouldn't bet. Set it up at TDC and then turn it back a short 1/16th of a turn BTDC. It should run or puff white smoke at that setting.
With the first three push rods loose, pull #1 injector and set a welding rod in on top of the piston. Watch for the TDC when the rod tops out. Then turn it backwards the short 1/16th of a revolution. 1/16th will give you 22.5 degrees BTDC.

How do you measure 1/16th? Need to look in a book, 22.5 is probably to much? Wonder if the damper has been replaced with one with out marks.

I'll try to take a wire wheel to clean off the dampener , maybe there are some marks there but that doesn't help with no pointer or even the idea of the location of where it should be for close enough guessing .
