Hi guys. I found me an 04 3500 Duramax. I've been told if we ever pull a trailer that we have to have farm name and a DoT number on it.
OK . . . So do we get fined for talking on our cell phone in it like the semis ??

Good question. I really dont know. I guess you need to look and see exactly how they have the law worded. Is it anything with a DOT number or if it has a weight restriction.
After doing some reading, If it has farm tags , it is not considered commercial. Here in missouri you can operate your semi with no CDL if you are hauling your own grain and the truck has farm tags. You do have to have your health card. Even though it has a dot number its not considered commercial. Im GUESSING that the law wouldnt apply. Someone can correct me if Im wrong.

OH YEAH, that will really help. Just don't call more than once or further up the chain of command. Your recently gained knowledge will be replaced with a air of mass confusion.

I would resist putting a DOT number on your pickup as long as possible. If you end up doing that, then put it on a sign that can be removed when you are not towing. Once you put a DOT number on it, you will be fielding calls from the DOT, and they will want to come to your house after a year to make sure you are doing everything right. If you go out of state with your DOT number truck, then you need IFTA fuel sticker stuff and keep track of miles.
I have a semi on the farm that I do all the paperwork for. It is not for hire, it goes two states, and has been required to have a DOT number. Almost weekly I am fielding paperwork from the DOT, that they send me as they know the truck has a DOT number. Are you ready for that for your pickup? My dually will run incogneto as long as possible.

I would say if you don't plan on leaving the state very often and/or you don't already have a USDOT #, I wouldn't bother with it. Just plate everything appropriately and make sure you have a driver's license for it as well...CDL. Stay off the phone too.
Between me, my brother and my dad, we have 3 pickups and a gooseneck flatbed and cattle trailer. No DOT #'s on anything.
My dad's buddy, a recently retired IL State Police master sargent, has no numbers on his dually and cattle trailer either...

I DO like the idea of the magnetic sign though.

I would think if you have the DOT # already. Have a magnet decal made, and slap it on when you feel nervous. Or keep it behind the seat and claim you forgot to put it on.

I farm in the land of Iowa so I have the DOT #. I guess to go into Illynoise I have to have the IFTA sticker also. I fixed that problem, I quit hauling beans to quincy soybean.

hmmm wonder if I am supposed to have a number when I use my F350 on the vac trailer ?
The vac isn't plated although it's ball hitched, with brakes and all the lights but no suspension . DMV wouldn't register it since there's no ID number on the trailer and said we couldn't use the serial numbers off the engine or vac since they could be swapped out , and since it wasn't home made they wouldn't title and plate it as such. Their grand plan was for me to wait until I got a ticket and have a judge tell me how to do it .
So, since it's classified as a farm implement I shouldn't need a number right ?

That depends on whether you get ticketed on the third Monday following the second Thursday preceded by the prior Saturday being near a full moon. However, if you go to court on the fourth Tuesday prior to the next Wednesday that falls after the second Sunday a week ago, then the whole point is moot.
