If your wife isn't familiar with 4wd, don't get anything without auto 4wd or full time whatever.
We've got a Jeep Grand Cherokee and for whatever reason the 4wd is screwy on it (it's a Jeep thing and apparently I don't understand)...anyway, wife took it in the ditch on I-80 last winter. Luckily it was near an on-ramp and I wound it up to 30mph in the ditch and jumped-literally-back onto the road and up the on-ramp the wrong way. lol

We got a 09 Nissan Murano and it is a blast to drive. It has CVT transmission and going to Springfield and back (300 miles) yesterday got 25 mpg. I swear good cruisin speed is about 75 , she planes out real nice at that speed.

just bought a new gmc terrain. Its a chevy equinox clone. Havent checked by hand yet, but puter claims 24 mpg mixed. Awd. Looked at an outback, and it was ok..just didnt like the way it handled, but it looks good and is supposed to go through anything(damn salesman had to ride along and wouldnt let me off road...lol) Outback also has more engine noise. But an outback with close to 200k miles on it still has an asking price of close to 5k, the resale on those things is incredible. Both vehicles were close to the same msrp, got a little better interest rate on the gmc, dont know why, as it wasnt financed through gmac anyway..

If you're a big guy check out a Chrysler 300. They come in AWD and fun to drive with the hemi. Loads of interior room. I am tall and am very selective about interior space.
Good luck.

Sandbox - not that big of a guy but we rented a 300 down in Florida last winter and have yet to find a smoother riding car. We really liked it. I didn't know they made one in AWD... www.caranddriver.com/reviews/car/10q2/2010_chrysler_300c_awd-short_take_road_testI think AWD may only be available with the Hemi in the 300C for the 2011 models. We just bought a new 2010 holdover and they discounted the hell out of it. Good luck.

Damn sandbox, people are gonna think you're a lawyer or something driving that boat. I do understand though, considering you're like 5 ft. and 22 1/2 inches tall.

There are now 4 Ford Escapes in my family.
Great smaller SUV, with 4X4 to cope with our rural winter roads. A decent amount of clearance under it if I need to offroad into the fields. Decent mpg. Comfortable, nice seats, drove one from WI to MT and back without discomfort.
Only drawback is they're pretty popular and locating yours in a crowded parking lot is an occasional challenge.

My neighbor has been a Subaru man (and his wife as well) most of their adult lives. They currently have a Outback....love it. Their driveway is, to say the least, a significant challenge in the winter time.

Toyota Rav4 with a v6.. It has plenty of balls and gets 24-25 mpg.

I normally don't buy forgien but my sister had an Outback and the neighbor bought a 2011. They are a sweet vehicle. Probaly the best milage you will find in a family size SUV. That comes from a guy who never drove anything but Mopar or Ford. Larry
