Check engine light has been staying on in neighbor's pickup. He intends to take it to town to get it checked out. Anything obvious he should check out or look for before he makes a trip to the dealer? TIA for replies.

Tell him to head to the auto parts store before seeing dealer and buy one of those cheap OBD II readers. He''ll have the same money in it and then all you neighbors can use it to save the trip into town later on down the road.

If the rig has a digital odometer you can read codes by cycling ignition three times without starting engine. ON = OFF = ON = OFF = ON The codes will then read out on the odometer. For older rigs with the analog odometer you can do the same thing but the CEL (check engine light) will communicate by flashing a number of times. Link to doing codes in the older rigs: dodgeram.info/Engine-Gas/OBDI/pcm_fault_code.htmdiscussion form about reading codes in the newer rigs: dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen-ram/205508-read-trouble-codes-without-code-reader.htmlOnce you have the codes you can use the miracle of google to find complete lists of codes. I had to replace a throttle position sensor in our '01 w/V10. It was supposed to be a common problem for them. But it could be about anything triggering the CEL. Good luck.

Just talked to neighbor again. Dealer checked it out and the pickup needs a sensor replaced. They didn't have it in stock so after getting it in he plans on replacing it himself.
