When I say doable though, I mean in a decent amount of time, without spending a heckuva big chunk of dough, and it not be a fustercluck when done?
Ford should of had thier head yanked outta thier hiney when they created that 5.4 for a 3/4 ton pickup. That is the absolutely most gutless engine right in line with the bow tie 305.
Fuel mileage is horrible and won't hardly pull a hat off your head. I know fuel mileage would be poor with the V10 but at least I could pull whatever I hooked behind it.
Seems since the days of the computerized engines that swaps for bigger engines has slowed. I remember pulling 305's and 400's out and dropping in souped up 350's in the Chevys in my younger days was common and easy. No different with Ford going from 360's and 302's to 390's.
So I imagine changing the brain is a necessity but what about the accessories under the hood? Are they different between a v10 pickup and a 5.4 pickup? Any of you fellas been around or know of someone that did a swap out?
I hate to trade off this pickup. It's what I want. Has just a lil over 80,000 miles is all. Got the flatbed on and pretty much decked out like I want. Plus, seems like used pickup prices have really shot through the roof and I got a real good deal on this one and like to still be able to enjoy it........ minus the gutless "power" plant.
Thoughts? Thanks.

I'm gonna say by the time you swap and whatnot, that you'd be ahead to sell what you got and buy a v10 or trade trucks.
I would guess the crossmember under the engine is different, the tranny is different the radiator is different and a crap load of other small nickel and dime details.
Plus add in the cost of busted knuckles and *&^*(&^*(&^(* at it and I'd say find another and make a deal.
my .02 if they count.....

If the V10 is physically longer then the 5.4 it wont work, that 5.4 is jammed in there pretty tight.

Isn't the Ford V10 to their 5.4 as the Chevy 4.3 is to the 5.7....same block, just too extra or less cylinders...?? Couldn't imagine much different other than compensating for the length...

I know you can put a V-10 in a Sqaud car. It tight but does fit and is fast......

I'm guessing it wouldn't be an easy swap, I know just to put the a I6 in a jeep in place of the 4cyl, you have to swap transmission, input shaft on the Tcase, Move motor mounts, move steering linkage. Now with that said, if you had a donor vehicle right there, I've been told the swap can be done in a weekend. I would think a truck would be a lot harder.
