Seen a ad for 6 3-5 year olds with calfs that he says are thin but would fatten up . I thought about calling him on them since they are reasonably priced. What other reasons could there be for them being thin other than maybe lack of feed?

wormy. Sometimes those thin cows have enough damage they never fatten up.

He is asking 1225 a piece for them with good looking calfs on the side. I called and left a message. Thought If he still had them I would atleast look at them. I dont know how good of a deal that is?

It's pretty tough for any mama cow to pick up condition while she has a calf sucking on her. Also tough for her to breed back on time when she is thin.
IMO, it's kind of a damned if you do or damned if you don't thing if you buy them. Feed them a lot of $$$ high TDN supplement (cake, corn, lick tub) to try and bring them back in to condition. Or let them eat grass, water, and salt, not gain back, and not breed back well.
The time to put some condition back on them is between weaning the last calf and the birth of the next.

John's got a good point.
How old are the calves?? If they are fall calves, you could be close to pulling them off and put the energy to the cows and grow the calves on your better hay and some supplement.
It's cheaper to grow a calf off the cow than to feed the cow to feed the calf.
That's under the market for price, either he doesn't know the value, or there is a reason he priced them under. Go with caution. Might be a buy as pairs and sell as singles kind of deal.

So whats the scoop? I'm a Little late to comment on them being thin, but it was covered pretty well.
