Wondering if anyone's got an '07 or newer GM pickup and has installed a business radio in it. If so, where'd you put it, run the wire and antenna? I know a permanent antenna on the roof is probably the best, but I don't want holes in the cab. TIA.

When the new body style came out (lil brothers had two now.. running an 02 model now I believe) we were told to go through the firewall directly to the battery with your power wire. Not to mess around trying to find something in the fuse box or scraping insulation off another wire in the cab.
Now.. I'm not really certain how those new ones front cowls between the hood and windshield are fabricated with the later models but we used to remove that and place a bracket with a plate under the cowl to attach the antannae to and then run the coax through the firewall as well.
Like you, I'm not real keen on drilling holes in the top of the cab... and then trying to fish for the coax without dropping the headliner.
Can always hide all the extra coax required for business band under the floormat or carpet depending on what you got.

When I had my '01 Chevy, there was a rubber grommet pass-thru thing on the firewall that was handy as all get out. I got the coax through that, and found a free ignition post in the fuse panel and was good to go. But, GM decided to quit a few little niceities like that. In my '09 there's no open spot there and not many options for mouting the radio under the dash. For the antenna itself, I thought about screwing a steel plate onto the toolbox and putting a Dukes of Hazzard style magnetic whip antenna on there or just self-tap screw a permanent mount to it...not sure how all that ground plane crap works though.

I can't help you with mounting your radio, but I have to replace ours as they're about 30 yrs old and can't be converted. Does anyone have any suggestions on brand of radios? We only really need about 10-15 mile range---mostly 2-3 miles.

I still want to know what the BFD is with this radio deadline thing...what we have now won't quit workin. It gets awfully spendy buying radios nowadays.
Anyway, we mainly have 40 or 50 watt Kenwoods, depending on conditions you can really get some range...20-25 mi if it's flat.

I still want to know what the BFD is with this radio deadline thing... Simply put Gambi.... crossover issues because so many frequencies are being needed with so many others out there wanting 2 way usage. And the other part of that.... Federal cash cow. I was still using the old regency that was bought new in 86 here in the house. We could get ranges of over 30 miles away with it. Now..... gets to be tossed. And don't think you won't get busted. With the satellite technology the gov't has in place... they will know when we are not following the limitations placed and you'll get a nice fine in the mail. Talked to a radio tech only reason I know this much. I too was tempted to just keep using the old radio.... till he told me the fines you face breaking the new ruling. I don't remember now the dollar amount but at the time it was enough to cause a lump in my throat.

Here is a pic of where mine was in my 08 silverado There is a "knockout" under the drivers floor mat that I ran my coax out of and up the center of rear windor to a magnetic antena. I also ran my power and other wires out the same hole to the engine compartment. Attachments:
