A while back I inquired about using some used heavy duty 1 ton truck tires (275/70R18) as implement tires. Seemed like a waste to throw away 10 ply tires just because the tread was worn and there was nothing else i had with the same size rims. A few leads I called hemmed and haawed about the idea and one told me it was possible but "Highly Impractical". I was about to give up on the idea as I was starting to feel a little foolish about it when I decided to call Gensco Aircraft Tires. They were very helpful and sold me a set of 18X7.3 6 hole rims. I figured the cost plus shipping was only slightly more than replacement rubber for a 16 inch 6 hole implement tire. My local tire guy and I figure the 10 ply truck tires are a heck of a lot better than implement tires for road use. Anyway, here are a few pictures of the tires and the small gravity box I installed them on. Attachments:

I have already used this quite a bit a find it handles a full load and trails better with the truck tires. I know several others expressed an interest in doing the same thing. If you consider it I would suggest you give it a try and your best bet would be to contact gensco at thier Texas location (the Alabama location was very little help). They're on the www at www.noflats.com/Attachments:

Gensco has a lot of good deals on implement type tires and for a good price. I always get a laugh at the do not execeed 25 mph warning and the tire is rated for something like 210 mph. For those that don't know gensco deals in used aircraft tires

jr, get rid of the wagons and use a dump box and trucks!!!! lol
One thing to keep in mind is to make sure that your stub axle is heavy ehough. You put bigger rims on, and if the dish of the rim is not centered you could change the load on the rim and or axle and have a little problem with the rim or axle breaking.

No just kidding. lol. Implement tire are the worst junk you can buy for tires IMO. I know some guy who have used the airplane tires. I think the downside is they're so heavy walled they're hard to mount and dismount. Should last forever, I think they're like 26 ply.

We have a pair of wagons like that with supper single truck tires on them with no tire issues at all.
I was thinking of buying tires for my disk ripper from noflat but bet the freight will make them rather expensive. Last fall I changed flats so often that the threads never got rusty!

Actually the frieght was not all that bad as I recall (would have to look it up). Gensco told me that they take the airplane tires and cut down the sidewalls so they are easier to mount on rims. Otherwise it would almost take a split rim in order to mount them.
I did have some concerns about the rims taking any side pressure and also if the hubs and spindles would take it but the application I am using is a smaller box and would probably "only" be a max of 12,000 lbs total. I think its still a better setup than the 15" flotation implement tires. The wagon seemed to sway less as it crossed uneven ground and it seemed to hug the road a little better when on the tarmac.
I only did it on one box to see how it works so time will tell.
