Did they ban you from Agtalk because all you ever wanted to talk about was Care Bears, Smurffette, and Man Crushes on lame-ass Nashville stars?  Why is there such pathetic contributions from you goofy basterds?  In all seriousness, if you want this board to last, you gotta stick your neck out on the marketing page. I can proudly tell you that I wore out more Aliases over on Agweb since 2003 than I can remember, and never once have I made an accurate market prediction. In fact, the game of market discussion ain't about getting it right, its about forcing people to engage their gray-matter. If you can make somebody else think, then you provide an invaluable service. If all you do is stumble around and say dumb stuff it helps. Often a tidbit of insight from a complete moron will spark the best discussions. Just think, that moron could be you!!! I understand that prices reflect more than supply/demand of grains. The outside markets shove things around more and more every year. Nowhere is it written that 350 million barrels of crude inventory = X price. Human emotion is as volatile as the endorphins released by the panic glands, so the odds of being correct in the short term are next to nil. Nobody likes to read Doom all day, not even me. We can bang on Obama till the cows come home, but there are plenty of broke fvckers all over the place doing that. The world has enough doomers with keyboards. What we lack is ideas. Got any?? |

I have to take looters side on this one. There is olny so much one or two line cute/smart ass remarks that can be made and then some main course needs to be served.
Now I can and have made those smart ass remarks and plan on doing it some more but there needs to be some cake to go with the frosting.

Looter you bring up some very valid points. I really lack on a lot of things marketing being one of them. I enjoy the fun but I hope to learn something from this board be it marketing, mechanical or crop or even be able to contribute knowledge about something. I think Marland and those guys have put alot of work into this, but it up to us to make something out of it.

I guess everyone on here has their own reasons
Sometimes I come here to learn something or get help with a question or problem that I have and maybe I can help someone else out on a question or problem they have
Sometimes I come just to have a laugh and forget about the stressful part of what we do
I kinda look at these boards as sitting on the tailgate with your friends and relaxing but I know if I have a serious question or I need someones opinion on something I can get that also
as for marketing learning all you can is great BUT alot of people are content with what they are doing OR they don't want to discuss it on a public forum
just because this forum isn't all about marketing and 100% serious all the time DOESN't mean it will not last
If it fails it will be because people find it either Boring or it turns into a pissing match between a few users and nobody wants to listen to the drama because most of us have more than enough stress and drama in our lives the way it is
If you don't want to read the jokes and little razzing posts that is your choice the same as if I don't want to read your marketing strategies or reports then I have the choice not to read them either
I am not trying to be a smartass just saying how I see things and yours and everyone elses opinions may differ

I was being serious heck people tell me all the time that my beef need to be cheaper and that my hay does also and if I could get corn at $2 bushel then I could lower my prices and still make a few $$$ plus be able to feed more beef for the same input cost now why can't you sell me your corn at $2pr bu |

bc, There are many in this world who don't think we should be feeding grains to cattle. We should all be eating grass-fed beef, it's better for ya,  Those people should also start getting accustomed to the feelings of hunger and a lot lighter wallets to boot. You can 'specialty' market your beef for a potential price premium, but as long as we sell our product in the traditional open market, farmers/ranchers are pretty much price takers and not price makers. Oh sure, those with storage can take advantage of basis/margins, but time is almost always involved there. Time is money to the world. If it wasn't, you would finish your cattle on grass instead of hastening the process with grain. My marketing philosophy has always been buy high/sell low, and I think I have a pretty proven track record for it. I suck at marketing, and with the unpredictable yield potential in my neck of the woods, I have left a ton of money on the table many times, fearing the inability to deliver on contract due to lost crop for whatever reason. |

I know what ya mean the risk is too scary to gamble on sometimes
a few yrs ago I jumped on the "all-natural" bandwagon and it worked out well but has ran its course as the premiums have ran out
WIth cost to feed now I will go back to implanting them so I can get the added weight gain
We have fed cattle over the yrs but with the volatile grain markets I have went back to selling stockers and have been doing decently well
when i get the cow numbers up and have a little cushion to gamble with I might go back to feeding some again but it all depends on how this economy goes and right now it is a crapshoot
Hell I might have to just start eating them to survive
I wish I had the land available to grow the grain to feed my own but about all we can grow down here is ROCKS

Serioiusly, we are considering sale of all 480 acres with 415 tillable acres. We're selling as I'm tired of the 100 mile drive each week and being gone all week. I bet you could hire it farmed and raise your grain for your 4 legged creatures a bit cheaper.

I am not selling anything and have nothing to promote. I got on AW a number of years ago 2005 as both Grandfather and Father had been grain merchandisers and one owned his own small company and father eventually got bought out in transition and worked for ADM. I eventually wound up trading futures with someone my grandfather had sold oats for their mules in the 20's. That was one of the largest farms in Arkansas. I do think we learn things from each other and not actively trading the markets today for conditions with politics. I do not trust this administration. I think there is the question proposed to discuss an intelligent condition of crop condition and risk for price. A long time ago I took a group to Pensacola NAS prior to our moon mission. They gave us a test to prioritize what are the most important of 40 items for a lunar mission. You would do it individually and then do it with a group of 8. Without an exception the individual order that as good as collective order. I think the question was to come up better order for the good of all. No one knows more than another. We are all in the same condition and trying to compare conditions and issues. If you want to contribute, I think it will benefit others. There are no right answers. As smart as thirsty I think he draws some bad conclusions but does not mean his input not important. His may be greater than mine or anyone else.

You guys should start watching what is going to happen in Argentina to corn plantings. Once it become apparent the U.S. corn yield in no more than 15/bushel prices will be higher. This goig to give Argentine farmers a big incentive to cut soybean plantings to raise corn. I expect a 40% increase in Argentina's corn plantings in the next growing season. The result will be more tightness on soybeans and higher prices. Argemtina can grow corn as well as the U.S. and likely will be able to sell a lot of it to hina.
