Wondering what you guys are going to do with the failed cotton and wheat ground if you get some rain. Western Kansas has been getting a little rain but I don't know how far south is goes. Insurance gets set from Aug15 to Sept 14 . Could come in well over $7 maybe $8 per bushel. Are wheat acres going to be way up?

Ses, as far as the south plains is concerned, it would take a lot of rain to make any kind of a small grain crop. We have no top moisture or subsoil moisture. Even if mother nature changes things up any harvest wheat would be for rotation purposes. We are not good wheat country (too sandy) and if cotton stays anywhere around the dollar mark it will stay king. The guys in the panhandle and Noble may have a different story. I will be interested in what they have to say, also.

I thought that might be the case farther south but it's kinda hard to leave land lay bare all winter too. I went to Garden City a few days ago (SW Kansas) and was amazed at how crops looked. Corn was gone anywhere south of I70 , some being chopped, some should have been, but the milo looked from good to fantastic. Apparently they started getting rain after the corn was shot and got the milo back to going. One field was burnt up corn, next to it 80 bu. milo if it gets enough rain to finish it. Quite a bit of summerfallow and failed wheat that was sprayed that will go to wheat. I think if the price is good enough a lot of that failed corn ground will go to wheat too.
Hailing here now, stones as big as baseballs. Better get off of here. Later.

OK storm is over for now. Got quite a bit of hail , mostly quarter sized with some golf ball and a few baseball sized throwed in for good measure. My kid said it poked three holes in the metal roof of our barn. shit happens. Looks like more on the way. Don't think it doe too much damage though.

Well, good to hear back from you. Was wondering how things turned out. Hope the damage is minimal. As far as wheat production goes, we aren't much of a factor. Many farmers here only grow enough harvest wheat for the seed to plant for their winter cover crops. That has gotten tricky regarding the protected varieties. I still think they can plant their own seed on their own farm, but better not try to sell it to others by brand name. Seems like I read somewhere they are trying to keep a farmer from saving his own seed on the latest protected varieties. Have you heard anything regarding that?

Going to plant wheat on all ground that isn't cotton or milo this year. If it doesn't rain collect insurance. If it does go to raining enough to build soil profile will kill wheat for cover crop and plant it all to cotton.

Mr. G Ithink that's what's comming in the seed wheat business. One way to look at it, if we want better varieties the companies need financial compensation for R and D. I kinda like keeping my own seed if I want to but can sure see the other side of it.
UC thanks for the response. BTW we got 2 inches last night. That makes close to 5.5 to 6 inches in the past two weeks. Our west farms have had more than that. Looked like big storms over that way last night. Sure do wish you could get some of that too. We were on the verge of burning up before that. Some corn was burnt up but has now come back to life. It will be interesting to see if it makes anything.

SES, we have had a chance for rain all week but nothing but dust storm Tuesday evening. Trying to keep one 90 acre test plot of cotton watered and if I didn't have so much water already in it I would have turned water of last week. Probably make 1 pound over my gauranted yeild. Grinch are you going to the 5 star sales next week in Plainview?

I plan on going Tuesday and probably Friday and Saturday. We had the same weather here last night - winds and a few sprinkles. I too am curious how things will sell. Have an extra double dump boll buggy but I'm afraid I'd be wasting my time pulling it down there. Just going to keep it for now.
