I've rebuilt ones like that. Push the end cap in. Remove the internal snap ring. The assy should then pull out. BUT, you will need to use the special disposable tool that comes with the rebiuld kit to get it all back together. The "tool" is basically a sleeve that holds the snap ring in place until it all slides together. Pull the ram back out and the snap ring slips into place.

kinda sorta clear as mud .... so is the end cap disposable -- or does a new end cap come with the rebuild kit? it don't sound too bad, but I might have to ask a few more questions of you when I get around to this little project.
sounds like I just need to get a rebuild kit and go from there.
this cylinder is definately getting worse, before long it won't have any room to fold up this side of the tedder. I just hope I don't need it again anytime soon.

No the end cap is not disposable. Just the snap ring holder that you need to put it back together.
Take a punch and hammer and drive the end cap into the cylinder. That should expose an internal snap ring that needs to be removed so that you can pull the cap and ram out. Putting it back together without cutting o-rings/ seals is the hardest part.

I think that I need to rewrite some of the instructions for clarification. The special tool is a plastic guard that fills the gap of the snap holder in so that the ram and end cap seals slide past the groove without getting caught in the groove during reassembly. You will push the ram and end cap back in past the groove (with the tool installed) and then install the snap ring in the groove and then pull it back out into the position that it's in now.
That should be better...I think.

so, if I understand this right, the original snap ring has to be trashed when the end cap is pushed in to begin with?
and when it comes to reassembly, the snap ring goes in the barrel last, but sort of reversed from putting rings on a piston in a motor.

I believe that the snap ring is reusable. Just take care when extracating it from the barrel.
modifyed for spelling Grammar nazi and all.

The snap ring is in the barrell, not on the piston. I assume that it's reusable.
