I don't pull one a whole lot anymore, but I would like one that is better than what I have. I don't want a new one, just something that cuts well, doesn't ridge terrible bad and one that does not eat bearings. It does not even have to be green. Not searching for one, just opinions on different models.

I bought an old IH 490 71/2" spacing this year and even though it needs new blades I was very pleased with the job it was used for. It replaced an even older Kewanee and it was a POS.

IH 475 does the job around here. Older/lighter version of the 490. Was the first year for it this spring but had the notion of planting right behind it cause it did such a nice job of not ridging. Like Hillbilly said, sure beats the snot out of the old Kewanee.

I don't think you can go wrong with a 490 or 496.

Another vote for IH. Usually can find a good one at farm auctions that is not too beat up or wore out for a reasonable price.

I am thinking in the 22-24' range, with very aggressive blades. I have heard a lot of good things about the IH models. I'd like to spend around 10k, but a lot would depend on the disk, where it was at, and the mood I was in @ the moment.

You can find a good one for 6-8k. If you want aggressive, get one with 9" spacing. We had one and it would cut sod. Would leave it a little rough, more so than the 7.5" spacing.

We bought a IH 470 a couple of years ago, mainly because we were doing some tiling. Been real happy with it, just a big, heavy piece of iron that does the job we were hoping for. Like after wheat, disking in manure, that sort of use. doesn't ridge bad at all.

Sunflower makes a very good disc. No ridging and built very stout.

I bought a 32' 496 IH this spring for $5500 in northern Ia. Paint a little faded brought it home and all I had to do to use it was hook it to the tractor.

I use a 20' 490 IH. Paid $500 for it , had to reblade the front gang. Still cheap disc!! Cuts very well , does not ridge. Pull a pony smoothing drag behind if I want too plant following. John

You missed the boat last year Roy. My 20' Sunflower offset sold for less then 8 grand on Big Irons Auction and was in pristine shape with factory sunflower harrows on it.
Went down to Oklahoma to a dealership to be sold and with the way the farm economy is down there this year, if I were you.. I would look hard that direction to make a buy. They are greedy for business. They won't give things away but you will make it worth your time for the trucking easily.

I have had a few international disks and my favorite is my 496. I've had a few issues with hydraulic cylinders over the years but it has been bullit proof. Bought in 1985 and ran over 700 acres this spring. I put a hitch on the back and pull my 25 ft packer and double basket. The biggest problem is my 5 bar harrow. I have to take it off when using my basket. Transporting is another problem because the harrow drags the ground. It's alot of weight on the back of the disk and keeping it up requires some time pinning it up. Overall a beautiful tool. I would like to get another one so I wouldn't have to remove the harrow. I am getting lazy in my old age. lol
