$8 corn

People cut back at the grocery store if prices go too high. I heard somewhere that we need $25 milk to pay for $9 corn if you have an average herd. If you have an above average herd, you need a little less.
Fat and happy is something that we haven't had since 2008, and that was followed by the worst year in dairy history that cost most farmers 7 years to pay for. It's just the way it is. And don't tell us to raise our own feed. If we raised our own feed, we would sell it.

I can tell you, as the father of two growing boys, one thing I don't cut back on is meat, milk and eggs.
They would mount a revolt.

Nice theory you have, they cut back from ribeyes to hamburger or name brand stuff to generic. They dont go hungry. They might wise up and sell there harley, fourwheeler and camper to afford food. Bottom line is they still buy food.

Looks like 9 dollar corn wont affect corn flakes all that much. Last time ran the numbers, a rise from $5 to $9 would raise the cost of corn in a box of Corn Flakes about 4 cents, roughly speaking. It's about a penny per box, per dollar increase in corn price.

It would be interesting to see what 9 dollar corn does to a gallon milk.

I'd guess less than you'd think.
I heard some time ago that the average dairy cow produces roughly 6 gallons per day. Assuming a $3 increase in corn price and a 30% whole kernel corn inclusion rate in the diet.
About $.16/gallon of raw milk.
Keep in mind I'm no titty tugger. I'm sure the dairy guys will straighten out my math.

you could take corn to $20 a bushel if their is still a glut of milk on the market it's still going to be cheap in the store. Supply and demand my friends.

The problem is nobody buys milk anymore, no matter the price. It can't compete with pop. Milk consumption per capita drops more every year.
Arrogant corn farmers on here, and Agtalk, and Agweb, are making me sick to my stomach.

You try to buy it as cheap as you can, we try to sell it for as much as we can. What's the difference? Are we supposed to sell it for less than market price just to keep you in business? Would you do the same for us? BTW, I'm a livestock guy too and I made a decision to cut back on the mouths I feed when I saw the writing on the wall. We all had that opportunity. I'll ramp back up when the market forces make it possible again. As another poster mentioned, until we cut supply, or increase demand, the price stays the same. We increased demand and artificially cut the supply this year. Try it sometime, it works.

I wish when my corn was 1.60 out of the field making 60 in 2005 the livestock guys would have offered me 4-5 dollars for it. That didnt happen and I dealt with it by getting another job to ride out that year.
