2000 F250, 7.3, 6spd manual, 245,000 miles. Completely stock. I do burn quite a bit of waste vegetable oil.
Noticed a couple of weeks ago that under heavy acceleration, above 2200rpm, the truck would act like it was starving for fuel and fall on it’s face. I knew I was ready for a fuel filter change, but hadn’t got around to it yet. Truck drove fine otherwise.
During the course of a 100 mile trip, truck started stumbling badly during normal driving conditions. I changed the fuel filter – no change. I could drive for a few (5-25) miles, truck would stumble and finally die. This happened 4-5 times, and the last time I took the top off the fuel filter bowl – no fuel present. Decided that the electric “lift pump” was bad. Changed it out on the side of the highway. Truck restarted, drove for about 5 miles, died again. Would restart, drive 5 miles, then do the same thing. Never had fuel in the bowl when I would get out. Had a full tank of fuel. Trailered home.
Took fuel pressure regulator apart and cleaned. Blew the supply line from outlet of lift pump to bowl out. Re-assembled, ran for approx. 60 miles before it died again. This time, it had blown the fuse for the pump. Replaced fuse, restarted, ran for about a mile, died again – fuse blown. Replaced fuse, hit the key – blew fuse. Trailered home.
Dropped the tank. Cleaned screens in the mixing chamber (they were a little dirty, but not horrible.). Blew out line from tank to inlet side of pump. Drove for about 1 mile, fuel bowl is empty again. Cycled the key, pump is not running. Ah-ha, says me, must be the fuel pump relay acting up. Disconnected pump from truck wiring, and wired directly from the battery to the pump. Pump kicks on, but within about 3 seconds, wires are too hot to touch.
I am stumped. No idea what to try now. Any suggestions?
