As indicated in a previoius thread, I recently bought a tractor of a different color for a change. I'm experiencing a learning curve from green to red. I have always run my Deere 8200 FWA in a gear not to let engine speed lug below 2100. I am attempting the same on a C-IH MX 240 Magnum and not fairing well. We pull our NH3 tool in 13th gear on the Deere at close to 10 mph, and seldom dos it fall below 2100 rpm engine speed. 13 gear in the 240 is 9.5 mph and engine struggles to hold 2040. I down shift to 11th, at 8 mph, and engine is similar. Book lists rated speed of 2000, but C-IH shop foreman says these Cummins engines run slower, best around 1850 to 1900 rpm.
What do you C-IH owners run your engine rpm at under a load? There is very little actual load on this tool, as when ai stop, the tractor always coast to a stop with the tool in the groind.
I just don't want to lug the tractor engine, but perhaps I just don't know the peculiaritis of this tractor yet.
What say you?

I always heard that if you are going through the field at part throttle, and you can hit the throttle and the engine just takes right off with no hesitation it is not overloaded.

I'm a Deere man too, but bought a NH a year ago. At tractor school the guru said 1900 was the sweet spot.
Mine has a constant speed button. You program how fast you want to run and it shifts gears automatically, and runs most economically.
Down side is it does not warn you.
