Anyone make hay on shares??
Had a guy approach me that has 20some acres that he wants me to plant, then offered it to me to rent on shares. He wants some to keep/sell and instead of paying me to cut/rake/bale would prefer to split the crop.
What would be a fair split for the deal??

I use to bale on shares. But never put the crop out.
Is he wanting you to pay for part of the seed?

Dave, Is he going to pay for seeding.....preparing seed-bed ( one , two , three trips ) fertilizer grass seed ,etc. If I have to establish the hay crop and all costs involved , I generally take all of first years production. After that agree on a split of the crop depending on the rental value of the land.....if land would rent for $100 per acre , then land owner would get that much in hay. The problem comes when owner has an inflated idea of what hay is worth ....wants me to sell it...pile it in his barn...deliver it to buyer and pile in buyers shed and so on. John

He's going to pay for everything to get it established, seed, fert, lime. Pay me to drill it. After that, he want's to do it on shares.
Rental value?? Probably $250
Anything other than cut/rake/bale/stack in field, will be additional cost.

Sounds like you have all my questions pretty well covered......so you would give him flat $ amount or % of crop Four cuts in your area As long as he is aware of all the variables involved and you have something in writing.....should be able to make something work . John

Mow and rake by acre. Bale by the bale, adjust for some that want smaller diameter bales.

I have a neighbor who has been putting up one of my hayfields on shares for many years. She gets 60%. I get 40%. The field is rough, crested has taken over and it needs reseeding to alfalfa. Neighbor is tearing it up and replanting it. Haven't quite ironed out the details yet but I'm thinking either pay her cash for the work, fuel, seed, etc or just say she gets 100% share this season.
I'm contemplating selling the field to her. It's a stand alone 160 acres that adjoins her place. Best ground I have according to the county taxes. Watched some land get auctioned off a couple weeks ago in 3 tracts for $620, $645, and $680 and a lot of it was hardpan gumbo. Overall, my field is better. Seems land here has just about doubled in the last 10 yrs.
