I posted this in the other forum:
--------------------------------------
Anybody else as cautious as I am about planting this early ?
Last I checked, the optimum date for 100% yield potential here in east central Illinois was still a week either side of May 1st. Has that changed ? I must not have gotten the memo. I'll push that date a week IF the weather let's me feel good about it, but it isn't doin' it yet.
OK . . . Lol ! . . . you can all pile on !
(I wasn't gonna post this, but I thought, "Aw, what the hay, it might be fun. . ."
----------------------------------
How about you guys ? Are you waitin' or goin' ?

You don't plant corn until the hedge leaves are as big as a squirrels ear , not before .

There's plenty of hedge leaves bigger than that 'here' in NCMO already (which I've also always heard is one of the 'signs' for when to start) ... but there hasn't been any whip-or-wills whistling yet, and they are the supposedly the time-tested sign that corn planting time has indeed arrived.

Lol... True. Right wrong or otherwise there quite a bit of corn in around here.. I did send a text to my Ins agent and told him all the corn we planted yesterday has already started to come up..

Should get rolling tomorrow.......not on corn , have about 20+ acres of oats ground that is getting fit. This will be my second earliest start.....about 5 years ago planted oats on Apr. 1. Neighbors were planting on Fri. , Apr. 6 and yesterday , the 7th so I will not be the first in the hood to get started.
Morning low temps are forcast to be upper 20ies or low 30ies every day this week so corn is aways off yet...lookig at Apr. 20 or so depending on forcast at that time. John

Start date for spring fieldwork period was tentatively April 15th, but it has just been too cool to bother, soil temp-wise, and this weekend's rain should delay a couple more days. I'll take the rain, though. If the low areas are not wet enough to bury a 2wd tractor, it is not wet enough to plant anyway.......
Finisher has moved twice. Once out of shed to let combine in and planter out, and then back into the shed, so far.
