Going to have to change up my steps on our 630 to accomidate dad, has anyone ever seen or modified a set of K&M type steps to fit between the flywheel and tire on a two cylinder, or made their own set of steps to fit. Dad wants to get back on a tractor, and right now the 630 is about the best canidate for it, hand clutch, and to tell the truth, hay season will be awfully busy if I lose my baling partner.

I've found that with a welder, some scrap steel, a rainy day , and a little ingenuity most anything can be built . I'd go wide , bolted to the side and axle and make them easy for him to climb.

Not quite sure, we already have the factory step on there on the front, just too tall for him to streach his legs to at the moment. Couldn't climb up the back at the moment anyway, 630 spends alot of time running something on the 3PH. I think I am going to call a welder Monday and see what he has to say. I know that I need the steps and will probably add a handle to work the PTO and that pretty much would make everything except the brakes hand controlled. I kind of figure I will need a step that can flip up so it is low enough to climb and flip it up so it doesn't hang up going across the field.

This is just a wild idea that crossed my mind. Could you fabricate one good single step for him to step on at ground level and have it hooked into a piece of sliding door track mounted on the rear of the tractor. incorporate hand holds in a good position for him to use that raises and lowers with the step. Rollers inside the track hooked to cable from an electric ATV winch to raise and lower. Or might take a door track on each side with the cable hooked at the top of one side, under the step and running up the other side.

What about a pic of the other side. That flywheel will be turning when the engine is running, correct?

Step is in the shadows behind the wheel, flywheel has a cover over it. Bought it set up like this. If you need a pic of the other side, I'll have to search my files or take some more photos, that was the best I could find at the moment.

Can you just weld an extension of another step on the bottom of the current last step making it closer to the ground and less distance between them. Also can you put a stable handle on the side of tractor to help one pull themself up?

I don't think those old 2cyl JDs were ever intended to be a side mount tractor. At any rate, I've never seen anyone attempt to do so.
Most tractors that size around here had a Farmhand F10 which really makes side entry impossible. There was a 630 and 720 in the neighborhood like that.
The flywheel is on one side of the tractor. IMO, it would be even more cumbersome to try to get on and off the tractor on the clutch side. Belt pulley is fully exposed and turning when the engine is running. They always told me to take the tractor out of gear and engage clutch when idling because it is hard on the clutch otherwise. Clutch lever itself would be in the way too whether engaged or disengaged.

Yes SMASH, I got your picture, afraid it wont work with the 3PH and all back there, might could turn it around but IDK without some measuring. Measured the step yesterday, the origional factory step is 23" off the ground.
