I bought a Imac in 2007, the hard drive went south in 2009, and now it is acting up again.
The computer is very slow, it won’t keep up the my actions, it’s locking up. And I see the PIN WHEEL a lot and I mean a lot.
So what’s the life expectancy of a Imac or the hard drive.

I bought mine in Nov. of that year and it still acts like the day I set it up. Sounds like it is getting too hot - probably due to dust build-up. Best thing to do is take it down, lay it down on its face on a large towel, and use a vacuum cleaner on the air intakes at the bottom edge and back of the unit, above where the power cord plugs in. I'm betting they are clogged up with dust bunnies.
Then hook your vacuum cleaner hose up to the outlet and blow air in the top slot where the air/heat escapes. Alternate back and forth to dislodge any dust built up inside the unit.
I do this a couple of times/year and see about a 10 degree drop in operating temp. each time I do it. I watch the temp on a regular basis and this is usually my clue to clean it all out.
If this doesn't cure it, in the Applications->Utilities folder, there is Activity Monitor. Open that up and play around with it to see if there is an app that is using an unusually large amount of system resources. I had similar things to what you are seeing going on after switching to Lion. I used this app to nail it down to my UPS auto-shutdown software from APC. Their software was not compatible with Lion. I updated that software and the problem went away.
