I got flamed on the other site for this...Some people are just in a bad mood these days...Are 5 year old angus bulls too old to sell for breeding purposes? I mean they have bred cows for 3 seasons...maybe im just too new to the beef world, but I didnt think Id get crucified for asking the question....

Depends on feet and legs. Also how many cows has he bred?
THe reality is that he will be worth more as balogna than he willbe for a stud.
BUt if he is real good, why not dicker him out with some one else's bull to trade up in genetics?

No, not really. I'm gonna assume he can pass a breeding soundness exam and is mobile enough to chase cows??
You may have a hard time selling him for that purpose, but maybe there is a small cowherd nearby that could use a good bull for a reasonable price.
At 5, and in Iowa, he probably has a couple more seasons in him.

If he can pass his test and is mobile(and there is no reason he shouldn't) he would be fine to sell for breeding, but unless he is of some pretty super genetics, he isn't going to bring much more than killer price.

Around this part of Kansas, you can have a vet test the bull and if he is okay to go back to breeding it is announced as such when he sells. Still sells by the cwt like butcher bulls. The price on them has been anywhere from a couple dollars to almost $10/cwt better than butcher bulls. Just depends on who is at the sale and what time of year it is.
