Talked to a freind of mine who owns a regional seed company today. He says the big seed companies are expecting up to 30% of their seed from Argentina, because of shortages here this year. Seems to me if their weather stays dry their could be shortages,or shortages of the better numbers. This could figure in on acreage mixes, thus impact the markets. Any thoughts?

Many popular corn numbers are already not available for this area. Second or third choices will be used if planned acres are planted. Of course this area is on the very fringe of corn belt. Being dairy country a lot of acres go for silage. John

In Argentina the situation is becoming serious. The lack of rain has been punishing the corn and soybean producers. The month of December was the driest of the last four years, with an average cumulative rainfall of 20mm. According to the National Weather Service , the best chance for a significant rain event in the core production area comes in Jan 19-20 which would help some areas but it would be too late for others. The FAA ( Arg Farmers Federation) has already requested governement assistant to those counties affected by the drought and declare an “emergencia agropecuaria” for small and medium farmers. 400 kms north of BsAs , one the areas most affected , some counties have reported losses of up to 70% on the corn fields leading farmers to feed cattle with what is left Attachments:

Paraguay
Jan 4th
The drought affecting much of the eastern region of Paraguay in the Itapua Department, the biggest farmer cooperative with 300,000 has of soybeans planted said the loss there is already 30 %. This region has weather pattern similarities with part of Parana and RGS in Brazil, as it is located and affected by the same subtropical flow.
Planting called "early” , whose harvest is scheduled to start mid this month had already a sharp impact, and there are areas where the crop was lost directly and others that will be harvested, but with a performance quite lower than expected, ranging from 800 to 1,000 kilos per hectare, when the average yield ranges between 3,000 and 3,500 kilos per hectare,.
For his part, The president of the Cooperative said that still can not quantify the level of final losses because there are some areas of the department where rains were reported, but further north and northeast Itapúa the impact of the lack rain was much stronger. “ We are very concerned, if it still does not rain the situation can become a disaster”, he said.
Further north is worse Further north and northeast of the department, as in the districts of Natalio, Yatytay, San Rafael and Carlos Antonio Lopez, the situation is even more critical, because in this time zone the drought has been more prolonged .

Jan 6th The county of Pergamino , north 220kms from BsAs capital of Arg , is suffering the worst drought in 46 years. This county is known for having the highest yields ( nationally) of grain-soy crops due to its exceptional soils and location. It is part of what is called Pampa Humeda ( "humid-pampas" ?? ) . Its very well known that all this region is suffering dryness, but having this county in such dire state is not common to see. Latest survey from the National Weather service known yesterday says that sub-soil moisture in the afected area , northern BsAs , southern Santa Fe and eastarn-center Cordoba , is 50% lower than during the drought of 2008-09 . That yr corn and soy crops yielded abt 30 to 40 % lower. Pictures taken yesterday in Pergamino below. Attachments:

Argentina crop situation, by region , as of Jan 6th Buenos Aires: very poor northern, central, west and southwest of the province. The situation improves to the southeast and east over the Atlantic. The first corn is estimated with losses 60 to 100% of potential yield . Not able to plant a second time . As soybean is planted later , condition is "fair to poor" . Córdoba: the worst conditions are in the center and south of the province, while in the north of the situation is somewhat less in danger. In general soybeans is found “aged”, short, or are drying up . In addition they get insects attacks. 60% of maize is very compromised, with cases of total loss. The remaining 40% is over-stressed, with leaves completely dry. Many crop pollination began without the appearance of the ear. The late-born corn plants suffered no losses, but they are very complicated. In general, the situation of coarse grain crops is very worrying, because the expectation is low to zero yields in many cases. Santa Fe: critical, especially in the southern of the province. In several departments the corn yield loss is irreversible. Soy retains chances of recovery, but if it rains within a few days. La Pampa: throughout the province is very dry, except for some towns near Santa Rosa and General Pico. Entre Ríos: a regular situation in the province, in urgent need of more rain. Chaco: regular moisture situation, in need of new rain. Formosa: complicated situation in the province, mainly by evaporation caused by high temperatures, but with potential yields of 1800 kg/ha.
