There is a one ton gmc with the duramax in it coming up on a auction. Any problems with these older ones I should know about?

I recall (foggy memories???) that the first ones had a factory recall for the glowplugs (love that name, though). Once corrected they ran a long time. However, I run a Ford with the wonderful 7.3 Navistar diesel which has been totally awesome, so I'm biased against Govt. Motors vehicles.

Same here. I have two fords with the 7.3 in them. Ive got a chevy gaser 2wd service truck now and was thinking of replacing it with something newer with 4x4.

The injectors go bad, if I remember right GM warranteed them up to 200,000 miles.
Otherwise, my dad had an '02 which had the same engine and put 195,000 mi on it with only a water pump replacement.

While I like my diesel trucks and farm equipment, this run up in diesel prices is causing pain. Those Congresscritter frickers need to get on the drill baby drill page.
Real trucks have glowplugs (like that name) not sparkplugs.

Drilling won't really help. Last month we exported as much oil as we imported. Though we did import sweet crude and export the dirty stuff. Can,t burn it here but over there it's fine. At least that's what they said on the business news yesterday morning. Probably ought to check the numbers.

I thought the US was the only country that could refine that heavy dirty jitt. Me thinks the US doesn't have all that much light sweet crude any more. Could be wrong though.

i had a 01 Duramx for around 3 years. The injectors had a recall but the 02 injectors were great that is what we replaced mine with. and the other things we did was put a aftermarket fuel filter on under the hood the factory filters just did not seem to keep for a whole oil change here. other rhing that needs to be known is that they have a completly different setup in the ECM then any other duramx so the mechanics were alot harder to find for a 01 then any other year but i did buy mine used with 70 K miles in the spring of 03. I had to replace a motor because of complete loss of compression that spring and could not find no mechanic that would even break into it. I do figure the have fixed all these problems i drove the truck till it had 249 K on it sold it and have missed it ever since loved it. It averaged 19 MPG and hasd power to pull anything and run down the road as good as a half ton Gasser. 01 Chevy Duramax 3/4 ton

Did you ever find the cause of the lost compression?? Can't really say I've heard of those motors failing like that under normal use. I know in the street-stock diesel truck pulling market, the D-max is tough to beat.

That's why he is looking at a Duramax, doesn`t want a second rate truck. To the OP, have a 2003 2500HD with the 6.6 here. Newer body style than your looking at but has the same lb7 engine. The biggest issue with these is injectors. But as mentioned though, there is warranty for them. The only other problem we had was a small leak in the fuel lines where it would drain back to the tank if it was left parked on an incline for a while. Other than that it`s a great truck, gets around 20mpg doing regular driving.

I have two 7.3 powerstokes so once we get some miles on the new rig I will figure out which one is the truck of choice. So far I will say the heater is nothing to brag about in the chevy compared to the ford.

The few guys that I know that have one around here pretty much said the same thing about the injectors. That was really the only thing they did say bad about them.
