Looking for another haybine for next year, currently running a IH 1190 that has been good to us, was a $500 dollar machine, but I have had very little downtime. Anyway, on the hunt for another one so I can run this one as a spare or a second cutter when I have the manpower. Current one is a 7' cut, 9 foot would be ideal as it would match my current tedder, but I wouldn't rule out a hydroswing either. Must be a sickle cutter, dad doesn't want a rotary, leave it at that. Budget is $5000 or less. What are some good machines for the money, what to stay away from. Got dealers for the major brands, not color biased but would prefer New Holland origion but will take anything on a good deal. TIA

NH 489. Kept a couple of them running for 20 some years. Only relegated to the weeds because suddenly there was a MacDon 9300 around to knock down the farm's 80 acres of hay in a short afternoon.

Probably bigger than you want and more money, but one of the best buys I ever purchased at a farm auction was a MacDon 5000 16' hydroswing. It's a simple machine and pretty stout.
The weak point is the balanced head, which is actually JD. Newer MacDons use their own head. 16' of sickle is a lot of sickle to run off one head. I have not had any problems with it yet. I use synthetic gear lube in the head.
With 1000 PTO the swather is a perfect match for my Ford 8600 tractor. Cover about 300 acres per year with it.

I think most of the new hollands were pretty good machines. 1219 deere is ok also. Whatever you buy, make sure the rolls are solid and the wobble box is good-the rest is mostly fixable

I'll second the opinion on the MacDon...we've got a 4000...well built, easy to repair machine. It's seen a lot of hay. 9 foot cut. We had a JD 1219....rubber came off one of the rolls...a pain to fix. Uncle had a NH....rubber came off both rolls on that machine. Our MD has steel rolls...I'm kinda keeping my eyes open for a MD 7000 (12 foot self propelled).

I use a $200 Hesston 1010.
As long as I keep the bolts tight on the sickle drive it'a all good.
I expect you know you can choose the width of your windrow on most hyrdoswings.
