Anyone here ever done such a thing. I am gonna come up a little short on hay for the heifers this year by the looks of it. Have about twenty acres of volunteer corn out in one field that I might can do something with. My thought is to let it go till sometime in October, should be 2 to 3 foot tall by then, mow it down with the conditioner, dry it as well as I can and bale it. Wrapping it wet would probably be better but not an option at the moment. Can throw a preservative on if necessary but would have to rig it up first. If anyone has done this before, I would like to hear your opinion on it, see if it is worth the time. FWIW, they are also going to have about 20 acres of winter grazing as well, not carrying them solely on hay.

wait till frost kill, let it dry standing, then cut and bale it. a bush hog makes mature corn more pallatable for the eating. dry storage is best if possible.
