48: To answer the question: If I have a grow or finish feedlot? We are farmers with cows. Do what ever we can to make the most $$. This year looks like we will wean and grow till after the first then sell. This is the ration I used to grow my cattle in 2009. They yielded 63%. I only finished the top 1/2 of my calves. Sold the others as 800 lb. I had no problems getting a buyer! Sold them on the grid. I knew what I had raised. In 2010 I sent them straight to feedlot and had them custom fed. I had family issue and had no corrals to work with!!!!!! My Uncle was AZZhole. I got my own set up this year Attachments:

farmerkuk: Thanx. I enjoy working with rations, and I'm interested in the beet pulp deal. I will try to run these in the morning, but it might take a couple of days. Got a lot of irons in the fire right now.
Man...I don't have to sell you on distillers. Good job.
I'm conked out tonight, but just glancing at your rations, I have these questions:
1. Is this really oat straw or wheat straw? Those pics you posted of that feed lot with the big stacks of straw...is that oat or wheat straw? 2. Why are you feeding so much corn on the Finish Ration? Man...that's a lot of corn. 3. With all the distillers you're feeding I doubt if you need to be adding any fat.

That year I used oat straw, a neighbor planted oats. He combined and baled the straw. Not many oats grown around this part of the country.
You need to remember the year it was coming out of the corn crash of 2008 and was cheap in terms of feeding corn. A nutritionist did my ration that year who I got mineral from. This year I plan on using Midwest PMS and using their product. I will use their ration and wheat straw. There is not much alfalfa fed in feedlots around here
The big stalks of straw is my buddy he baled 14 circles of wheat straw this year. Im hauling off those piles to the feedlot. He is BTO, you should see his Simmyangus herd. It is a 1st class operation and always sells his calves.

I have been feeding distillers and this summer have fed straight and grazed them too. We in the past have fed gin trash and mixed with distillers in a mix wagon. What would be the best commodity to mix with distillers to make the most economical ration for feeder calves? I think the distillers is low in energy and maybe fat correct?

The dairy guys are right in the sense that wet distillers still has all the corn oil in it and is high in fat. On a dairy ration you can not exceed 5% fat. I have good friends who run beef cattle feedlots from 1,000-50,000 head, and they use wet distillers to cut corn 20% and supply all of the protein instead of using CSM or SBM. Distillers is high...not low...in energy and fat and PROTEIN. You said you have fed distillers straight. That's a no no. Distillers is finely ground and will wreck the rumen. It should always be mixed with some kind of roughage: silage, wheat straw or corn/milo stalks thru a tub grinder, etc. Cut corn/milo stalks at least 8" above ground to minimize nitrates and be sure to test for nitrates anyway...even if you were not in a drought. No cutting height worry on wheat straw. In a feed lot there's no roughage problem cuz your mixing with silage, hay, etc. In a pasture the cheapest way is to run wheat straw thru a tub grinder and mix the wet distillers with it. Sounds like you also have access to cotton gin stuff too.

farmerkuk: I tried to run your finish ration this morning. And, I have some questions:
1. Your Feed No.s say "Imperial". They look like NRC 1996 which has been updated to 2000. 2. Your Wet Beet Pulp does not say with molasses, but it is...correct? 3. What is 556241 Bulk Co-Product Fortifier? 4. What is 200 Premix?
I ran it without molasses, Fortifier, and Premix. It was a little short on CP and UIP, but I'm sure when we add any of the previous 3, it's ok. Give me the info, and I'll run it again.

2. University of Minnesota Beef Feedlot Ration Balancer
Just google. If you have any problems finding, let me know, and I will post URL's.

feelnrite: Let's try this: www.extension.umn.edu/beef/components/xls/U%20of%20M%20Feedlot%20Ration%20Balancer.xlsIt works. You will get a message that asks: Open Save Save as My suggestion is to Save it to your hard drive if you have plenty of memory. Then, you won't have to go on line all the time to get it. Read/print the Introduction. It's kind of a Users' Manual. Then, click all the tabs at the bottom and study them. You will input your data As Fed in # or % and it will automatically calculate it for you. If something is not balanced, it will highlight green. This is counter intuitive. Green should be good and red bad, but that's the way it is. You click the tab at the bottom that says: Ration Balancer and input your data there. It will automatically do the Batch and Performance sheets for you. You don't have to put prices in. But, study their Feed Library and use what's closest to what you have. As you type in each line of ingredients, you will see a triangle on the right hand side. Click it and you will get a drop down to choose from their Feed Library and click the closest one. Once, you down load the program to your computer, you can add 5 ingredients. But, study their Feed Library first so you can match their format. It will take you some time to study it and get familiar with it. But, it's free and pretty useful once you get the hang of it. On Dairy Rations, Mich State's Spartan 3 is really user friendly with a bar graph on the right hand side. You can change/add/delete ingredients and watch the graph as you balance the ration. You can down load Spartan3 for free and test drive it for 30 days, but then you have to pay for it. And...it's not applicable to beef. I just mention it to show you what I wish we had for beef. lol.

Yes, you definitely need Excel. You can go online and down load MS Office 2010 if you have a credit card. I'm running MS Office 2003, and it works ok. Office includes Word, Excel, etc. You can also buy it at Walmart and load it.
