Hey got back some haylage samples and everything is wher I would like it but the ash is high. even in stuff I didn't rake. You guys seeing that to?
Ash is 7-12% Yikes!

jrthe orig. : do you have tests from prior years?? I am going to ask nutritionist tomorrow what he is seeing in our area. Because of weather conditions I am thinking ash wil be up. John

JR, go ahead and say what you want to Peeler. I've meet him, and I'm purdy sure that ol gap tooth could take him. And I know you could take ol' gap tooth.
What do you WANT your ash to be? If it is under 8% it is very good. Under 12% is ok, but over 12% and that is not so good. IMHO, really ash is not that big a deal. The bigger number I look at is heat damage proteon. But hey, I'm an underemployed dairy farmer in the backwoods of a state that doesn't matter in dairy production. (that being MN for you 4x4x44 guys)

jr : nutritionist said 10% is about avg. for samples he has seen or tested for 2011 haylage.
Hey bent : Just checked with the Doc , He said if you can get your head out of your ash pdq , you will live to talk about it!! Have a good one!! John

I like the ash content below 7 just means you aren't getting a lot of dead stuff in there and to much of that dust/dirt stuff. I just thought it was funny that this year the ash content was higher than the last couple. Yea it doesn't really mean anything at the levels I have but it is a benchmark so I just thought I would see what others were seeing. Apparently all SES looks at is ash! LOL
