I'm looking at one. I don't want the diesel. I want the gasser and I'm not interested in the V8. I want some power for when I decide to pull trailer.
I'm looking at a shortbox 4 door.
Just toodling around going town to town down the road at 70 mph with no load other then the pickup and a couple passengers what sorta fuel mileage can I expect? Please no re-reads of the paper in the window. I'd like to hear some real life reports please.
Any horror stories on the reliablity of the V10 or distinctly bad characteristics it has other then the obvious not super great fuel mileage? I know the mileage won't be great.. I'm not looking for a yugo or minivan. Its not an issue. Can't be much worse then the suburban I'm going to trade in anyways.
Any owners I'd like to hear your thoughts please.
Thank You.

I've had two in pickups at work Rich. Sure wish it was still an option. I'm not a diesel guy so have nothing to compare with but they were great trucks. The first was a two wheel drive 99 model (first year I believe) and it chucked a spark plug at 95,000 miles. Head was replaced and its still working in the quarry with almost 200,000 miles. I think they now just helicoil the plug holes if there are problems. 13 to 14 mpg a bit better if traveling the interstate. Second one I had was a 2004 model 4wd and its still running strong at 160,000 miles. Its had brakes, alternator and oil changes only. Same milage with it. I now have a 2008 F250 with the 5.4 and it struggles pushing into a head wind. It too is 4wd and on a great day gets 12.5mpg. V-10's I had would pull a plow if you could get traction. Ford made a mistake when they quit using them in the smaller trucks in my opinion.

A friend of mine has had a couple of them and has had good luck with them. He's about as rough on a truck as you can get too. We have one in our motorhome which is not a very good comparison but I can say it is really a smooth running engine.

I had an 06 with 4.10s. Average was 10.6 and best was 11.5.... Worst though was 6 pulling a gooseneck with 16 empty pro boxes. Now I have an 07 Duramax. It will take a lot to get me out of a diesel now. Empty with mine is now 19 and 13-14 towing.

I can't imagine a V10 getting better mileage than an 8....kinda like V8's in semis.
There's no replacement for displacement...get an 8.1 in a GM pickup. lol

I'm done with Gm.
Yea, they make nice pickups but they do not cater to my likes.
1: Till gm decides to chuck that stupid frame drop design I am not interested. As long as the wheels can push the pumpkins through any snow or mud thats the only thing that drags on a ford... Gm's you can drag the damn frame.
2: I absolutely hate the gm seats. I cannot get comfortable in those things. They cannot be made for a man with any size to him. More then two hours in a gm and I can't hardly walk when I crawl out of the cabin.
The 5.4 ford is a joke. I own one. It can't hardly pull a hat off your head. I'm wondering if I look all over it real close it has an A.C. logo on it. ;D .... I set no speed records with that engine in the service rig and pulling a trailer I despise the thought of going anywhere of any distance away from home. Yes... I like the pickup but that power plant leaves alot to be desired. It has to work its butt off just to power the vehicle... let alone a trailer.
I can live with 13 to 14 mpg.. That 5.4 now doesn't make 12. My old 5.7 in the 97 chevy did 10 but it would blow the fords doors off for power.
I dont want a diesel because of wintertime driving. I don't want to mess with additives, gelled fuel, long idling, and face it... unless they are an extensive puller.... Diesels just don't pay anymore like in the old days when we all pumped 50 cent farm fuel into them. (any bastard that says otherwise he didn't do it is a blasted liar.... or.... he pumped clear in.... and then figured his records end of that year... and a good portion of that clear fuel in his pickup was reported as being run through a tractor.... Noone is going to believe otherwise).

To each their own Rich. I just figured for a big gasser that'd be the way to go. I don't like Fords and Dodges for the same reasons you dislike GM.

Start eating your vegetables and pack on another 150 lbs. I think you'll see my point alot clearer then.

Rich I am over 6'4" and top the 300lb mark and I feel the same about Ford seats that you do about GM I think GM seats are alot more comfortable to me than any ford I have ever drove and yes I own Ford Gm and just sold a Dodge after 4hrs in a Ford I can hardly get out of the thing I used to drive my GM from Mo to Fla 1327 miles and only stop for gas and I never hurt like I do in a Ford

I've got a slight curve in my spine. I dont' know if that has to deal with it or not. I drive alot with my left foot hiked up on the seat under my arse and leaned over on the middle seat cubby. It is one of the most comfortable ways for me to endure a long drive.
I just can't get comfy in those gm seats no matter what and I absolutely hate those lumbars.
My dodge I used to like too but here the otherday I took it on just an hour long trip from home and gimped around like a cripple for 15 minutes after I got out at the destination.
My Ford I have is just a plain bench seat but it is comfy for me to take a distance. When my custom cutter and I were crop touring I rode in his new Ford and that really sold me. I didn't want to get out of that truck.
I guess to each thier own. I have heard numerous people say they like the gm seats best but for me I just can't make them work for any distance.

Rich why don't you just get a big ol' grand marq and go pimpin' in comfort and style? I also propose seeing a recliner mounted in a pickup shop project.

My shop projects seem to be based off more function then fashion. I want to cruise in style. Another reason for not getting a chebby.
Besides... I threw away my fuzzy dice in the 90's. LOL

I have had two v-10's, and really liked both. Pulled good, and mileage was not pitiful, 12-15 usually. 15 was not often, but got the 12 or better hauling bovines. I just bought a 2011 and it has a new v-8 in it, because they quit the v-10.
