My head is red, but the hydraulic deck plate concept is the same.
Finally made the switch last year (traded heads). Don't think I'd ever go to the field without them.
They are one more tool in the box. Especially in variable corn, you can adjust them going across the field so you aren't butt shelling in the lower yielding areas, and open them up for more capacity in the higher, larger stalk areas.
For me, they were very much worth the extra cost.

i need to rebuid my 1083 head for my 1688 and was thinking about the kit that ag solutions (i think that is them) or probably the same thing that shoup has. do you actually find yourself changing the head that much? and if so how do you determine where a guy needs to be? sorry for all the ?'s, just never had one with hyd deck plates. also does it hook into the reel lift or where?

I don't run the combine much, but dad says he changes them all the time. But our corn is all most never the same going through the field. With all the we spots the stalks size varies alot in our fields.

Kevin....... on a deere they use the reel fore and aft (2 way hydraulics) on a case I'm unsure........ do you have fore/aft on your flex platform?

sounds like you'd be good to go........ I saw the conversion kits in shoup and thats what prompted me to ask the question....... thinkin about adding them to an 843....

I actually do adjust them a lot. Sometimes as often as every pass if we have a draw or pothole we're going through. At the very least, between varieties with differing stalk diameters and/or ear size.
CIH does use the fore/aft to adjust the deck plates.

I do use it more than I thought I would. You can watch behind the head out the side of the cab and see the difference it makes. The reel lift circuit won't work because it is not a 2 way circuit, but the fore/aft is on the Case IH stuff. But it sounds like you're good to go.

How does a guy tell were he needs to be while on the go? Just open enough where the stalks are going through good?

I watch for two things. Butt shelling, and how well the stalks feed. If I see shelled corn dropping out the head, I tighten the deck plates up. If the stalks look like they are bunching a little at the front end of the snapping rolls, I open them up a bit.
Rule of thumb is to open them up to just over the diameter of the stalk. Although some corn numbers will pick kinda trashy and I'll open them just a bit more to help pull the leaves through too.
