I tried the dish network and while there's a bit more to watch, I like a few of the locals on cable and the cable didn't quit every time a cloud passed by.

I'm paying for 512 from WB and getting 81... Not so good. Hi there MoJeeper, My name is Matt and I work for WildBlue (I'm in the marketing department at the corporate office in Denver). We saw a notice from Google about this thread. While our speeds vary by time of day (because of how many other users are simultaneously using the network), your system is performing way out of scope of what you should be getting. You should definitely not be getting only 81 Kbps for your service! My first thought is that your WildBlue dish needs to be repointed, but there are several other factors that could be causing such poor performance. Send me a PM with your name, street address, email address and account number (if you have it), and I will escalate your problem to some folks here who can diagnose the problem and get you fixed up. Just so you can tell that I'm legit, I'm one of the forum moderators over at the WildBlue World forum( wildblueworld.com/forum), which is our official customer forum. I'm WB Matt. Thanks.

I had Hughes for years, through Agristar and it got progressively worse, almost like dialup. I've heard Wildblue is similar in performance. They are terrible to deal with too. If you just have one computer and wireless isn't available, a phone card is probably best. You can also set up a network, I believe, using a phone card. A phone card is probably pretty decent, at least much better than dialup.. Whatever you do, I don't think you'll be happy with Wildblue or Hughes. I think they are all just plain overloaded with customers and that slows the system down too much.

BTW, here, wireless is available, 1mb for $35/mo. I send it wirelessly to three places so it's pretty economical and you can pick up a laptop anywhere around our buildings and connect.

might consider a smart phone with internet through US Cell or who ever and not only have internet with you all the time it is also a wifi hotspot for your computer. As fast as the above mentioned or faster. Only one monthly bill of $139 for three phones and US Cell at fairs etc sells them for $100 bucks no waiting for a rebate. (We have three people on our phone plan all with internet all the bells and whistles.)

I do use my uscc phone to tether when my WB isn't working, but my cell service can be just as bad as the sat at times. BTW. they want an extra $25 a month to tether. Luckily they can't tell so I just do it anyways.

Wow! that is good. I know they had trouble all of yesterday. Apparently had a problem with Anik F2 the satellite they use. Don't know exactly what it was but it lasted all day.
