JoshuaGA, it is tempting, no doubt. But we are too young to retire. What we will do after that? Buy some cows back and start all over? My husband is celebrating his 60th bday Aug 8. We spent 29 years building up this herd from scratch, and to have to give it all up now, surely at a loss, is depressing. We might sell enough cows so that we don't have to purchase much feed. You know, you never have explained why YOU shouldn't sell the cows and sell the corn, yet guys like me and JR should. If you are to young to retire, then certainly he and I are, and we have spent just as much time building up our herd as well. Just sayin.

dman, the dairy industry sucks in that you can spend your entire life at it and don't get rewarded commensurately at the end, as this year will be the end for many dairymen, due to reasons beyond their control. Herds will get sold for beef price (springing heifers already are). This would be true for you, me, JR, anyone. However, we are at that age where we are too young to retire, but too long in the tooth to start some other income-producing venture. That's where JR and you differ from us. You and JR also seem to make a lot of money on beef, and could expand that venture. We have no other venture. I would like to pay off our debt and get out. In that order. I do beg to differ where you and JR (why are we bringing JR into this conversation?) spent as much time building your herd as we did? ? You guys are about 20 years younger than us. You can't count the years before you ran the farm on your own. I don't know why I replied to you, as I would just as soon not converse with you, or anyone associated with Agweb, any more. Agweb is 6 or 7 corn farmers, 2 or 3 dairy farmers. Entirely too much drama.
