Well, I'll be leaving WA state soon, going back to MN. The military has been a good experience, but definetely ready to get back to the farm. The family farm has gone through some changesd since I've been gone, really not much opportunity for me there. Just curious as to what you guys pay to have custom done? Thought it would be a good business to get into, as I'm not really in a place to purchase any land to farm on my own. Growing up, we had a guy that would do custom cleaning of our feedlots, and he was always booked way out. Always thought it would be a fun job, hauling shit lol. Anyone have experience with any truck mounted spreaders? Suggestions or any other ideas? Wife will be heading back soon, has a job in Grand Forks, so I'm just trying to have things lined up for myself. Thanks for any replies/suggestions.

I think if you can get lined up on a couple feed yards I think you could do all right. The guy that spread mine has trouble getting enough done because of the need to spread on unfrozen dirt. He probably clears, this is just an educated guess on my part, $5 a ton after expenses. He might do a little better than that because I am only figuring what I paid him and am not including what the feedlots paid him. I left that out because with hired help things always end up costing more. I used to do alright did custom discing in the spring, maybe a little NH3, then baled all summer. Push snow in the winter. Put a lot of hours on a tractor quick that way but got some equipment paid for so I could farm.

Around here , that would be Indiana , there are some guys that travel around pumping out hog farms , but they use a drag line outfit , and inject it in the soil , does OK most times but can make a BIG mess draging it threw bean stubble ! Heard these guys get paid real well . Don't know if you can do that up north , good luck !

I was talking to a buddy today about another niche enterprise to add to my operation . We kinda decided that I should look into getting a planter and custom plant early soybeans . The yield data is showing that earlier planted beans are having an edge over the later planted ones . Maybe it could be a paying endeavor until the guys get sold on the idea geared up for it themselves.

I think if I was gonna do custom work now it would be cover crops. Everybody wants to try em but dont have the time in the fall. You could probly jocky the seed along with the work.

Got to agree on that post 420..... everytime I think about a cover crop... something else gets in the way timewise and 3 days later it rains and the opportunity has been lost. Just the way it has been working for me. John
