Looks like things are heading up again.
Talked to a field rep for local sale barn yesterday after the sale.
Buyers are trying to beat down the market, but the number of fats are running 20% or so under their normal run. Buyers tried to beat down the market by $5 in this end of Iowa last week, but by thursday, they had to add it back in to fill out their kill runs.
Today, the nearby board price is north of $130 and the auction market yesterday was $128-132.50 on choice steers and heifers. Said they sold some 1500# fat heifers for just a couple bucks over $2000/hd.
Kinda supports the bred heifer and cow prices around here. Sell her as a fat heifer and buy back a bred.
What are you other guys seeing locally??

The feeder calf market is pretty solid to higher every week. Lower 700# steers are upper $150s moving into the lower $160s. Lower 700# heifers are upper $140s moving to around $150 - $151. Butcher cows and bulls are up with most cows bringing mid $70s and bulls bringing lower $90s. This is up $20 from a month ago.
Last week bred heifers up close were bringing $1600 to $1725. Bred heifers at 6 months were around $1500 to $1625. Middle age bred cows, 6 to 8 years old, were running in the $1400s.
No fed steers and heifers come through the sale barns here as feeder cattle all pretty much go to feedlots and are sold from there.
Looks like there is still money to be made in the cattle market.

Local barn will run 4-600 fats a week, depending on time of year. I think the most I've heard run through was about 800ish, but that's been many years ago. No where near the cattle numbers here that there used to be. Another barn, now closed, used to run 3-500/wk. Those calves just aren't out there anymore. Here is the link to this weeks sale summary. www.kalonasalesbarn.com/home/Cattle/MarketReport/tabid/64/Default.aspx

None of the local barns, there are 5 within 40 miles of me, sell fats. Everything is culls and feeder calves. Occassionally there will be some 800 to 900 lb calves come through but not often. Feeder calves for the area of these 5 barns will normally be 900 to 1200 calves a week. Special calf sales held by each barn 2 to 3 times a year will have close to 1000 head for that barn alone.
What I find interesting is given the high number of culls last fall, the number of slaughter cows is still not what I would call extremely low. I just feel that grass calves are going to get hard to come by for stocker operators like me.

Interesting.
Those special feeder sales are similar sized here, but the barns here are probably 60 miles apart.

No real fat auctions around here anymore, all are sold direct. Nice to see the board move above 1.30 for sure. Feeder cattle are already kinda hard to come up with. The barns I go to are 30-90 miles away and have runs of 2-4k every other week, and usually a much smaller sale in between. But some are now just going with one sale every other week and skipping the lighter run. I never new of them to do that in February before.

I don't even know where you would sell fats except for the freezer beef people here. Other than small scale marketing, feeding operations are done here, just Cow/Calf, Stockers, Chickens and Dairys, all cattle feeders are gone except for a few cull cow feeders, and all the hogs are gone. Shame really, makes it hard to divirsify a small farm enough to support a family.

Sold a few fat heifers through the sale barn today.
Averaged 1323. The reds brought 131.60 and the single black brought 132.50.
The reds were 80# heavier at the same age and netted more $$$.
