Guess the reason I asked about value. Some livestock guys have the mindset they are growing crops for their livestock, so not looking to make a profit. ie, goes into ration at cost of production. Their profit comes from selling livestock, the grain/forages are just another input. Others look at opportunity cost. If they sold the grain, would they make more than if they fed it? Others still look at a blend. Can I sell my own production at higher market times of the year and buy back when lower? Everyone looks at it differently. Back in the hog producing days, I looked at the pigs as a way to add value to corn. We would put the profit/pig back against the corn that we fed. Priced corn the day it came out of the bin, and added the pig profit to it. Of course, some of those years we were feeding $1.80 corn too.
