Might be looking to trade trucks this winter. Running a Cummins M11 with a Rockwell 10 now and get along fine. The trucks I'm looking at are running ISM's with the same tranny. Know nothing about them except what I read.
Anyone have some real world experience running the ISM's?? Durability, lugging power, efficiency, etc??

I'm thinking Ism is pretty much the same as the m11. It's just the electronic version

An mighty damn costly to work on.
Cummins parts are just ridiculous these days.
That M11 you have now is no powerhouse. It gets the job done but not with any bragging rights of leaving the shifter in the tall hole pulling a long hill with 52,000 on the trailer.
ISM might be a bit more snappy considering fully electronic and you can rearrange some parameters but your M11 shoulda had the celect system on it so you could do the same thing.
If you ever need to replace an injector hold onto your shorts. They are over 600 bucks a pop. I can't remember the exact number.. I just remember they were over 600.
They run those engines in all the city run single axles day cabs with trailers it seems like Dave.. I imagine that engine would work just fine for you but....
It just seems like to me.. Cummins just aint the reliability in an otr rig like they used to be. I'm just not to thrilled to ever own one.
Also.. make damn sure you have a shop close by with a computer to hook to the engine if it ever has an issue so you can diagnose it. Truck shop you use tells you they don't need one or they think they have one that works.. better find another shop.
My .02.. which ain't much.

What year(s) are you looking at?
I drove a truck for a guy for 5 years that had an ISM at 425 hp and thought it did pretty well for an 11 liter motor. Night and day difference than the M11 I drove before that. Never had many problems with it really.

Gambi, looking for something 7-10 yrs old.
Rich, this ain't no coast to coast puller. It's gonna pull a trailer out of the field to bins, then 25 miles to river terminals. The M11 I'm running now is in a singe axle and we gross 66k. It is a celect set at 300. Fortunately we climb the biggest hills empty.

The one I drove was bought new and I put about 400,000 miles on it. I think all that went wrong with it was an air compressor and a turbo...both were passing some oil.
Look for pre-'04 model year without EGR.

We have an 02 425 hp ISM in a 9900i. Not a racecar, but no power complaints either. They are more costly to work on than a Detroit, but still probably cheaper than a Cat. Never have plugged the ISM in, and the only time it didn't start the batteries were frozen. My only complaint compared to the C10 in the other truck is the lugging ability, but the ISM seems to wind-up faster and use much less fuel.
