Short of a lead poisoning or chain hobble, how in the hell do you teach a dog to quit thier gosh darn digging?
Damn Lab has my place torn to hell with his digging. Yes, its been hot... He's black.. I know the heats getting to him. Stock tank and ponds and fresh water in two places for him to cool off and he uses them but then he's digging in the dirt to make a hole.
I'd like to have his toenails removed but the vet would charge dearly for that.
A hobble came to mind but not so sure that would be in my best interest. I know he can chew through leather.
Any thoughts or this just a way of the beast?
Damn annoying to say the least.

How old is the dog? Long time ago dad cured the dog of doin that by just shoving his face in the hole for a while... The dog we have now went through that for a while as an 'adolescent' but doesn't anymore.

I've found that dogs are kinds like women, you can't really train them. You just learn to live with their faults. (glad to have Dr. Love back with us)

Well Rich, its quite obvious that you are not the pack leader. ;D Your dog needs your attention, he needs a leader. Labs are the kind of dog that needs to be close to thier master. He is just looking for a companion, even if he needs to dig one up. Get tight with your dog and he will watch over you. if you wanna master this dog, you need to think like him. Labs are very smart, sounds like your playing catch up.

Labs smart? Ha ha ha ha.
Bullpuckey!
I've seen one smart lab and thats it. I've owned two and they are the biggest idiots for a dog I've ever seen.
Anyone watch Mind of Mencia? Everytime he said "dee dee dee" it reminds me of this dog.
But I will agree on closeness and companion. I've never seen a dog chase a tractor back and forth in a field so much like this one does. He goes everywhere I go to work ground.

Thank you for the Honorable Mention Shoutout Sheep Herder.. It's good to be back conversing with names I remember from days gone by but without the gloom of doom looming overhead in the form of a cloud that rains piss.

I agree my wifes dogs arent the smartest but they are coon, cat, opossum and rat killing machines. Now if I can break them of bringing there trophys to the front yard I will be happy.

I've got a chocolate lab and have avoided the whole digging thing, but he's 22 months old and has spent almost every single day with me, he is with me non stop around the clock no matter what I'm doing even if I have to leave him in the truck for an hour or two while eating and such. They want to be there every minute and "pout" when left out.

electric fence worked for mine when I had a garden. Probably wont work with the digging everywhere. I'd draggin the dog over to the hole and rub its face in it. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt.

I think whipping your pup is a bad idea. Have your wife do it.
You just simply need to set an example. Go out in your yard and start digging a hole, having your dog watching of course. Half way down have your wife beat the shit out of you. Do this three or four times over the course of about and hour. Might have to do this for a few days but your dog will eventually get it figured out.

Very good point ses ! but you forgot one thing , After the azz wipp'n walk over to your wifes flowers and take a pizz on them , as ses said make your dog is watching ! He will learn a new trick and in no time he'll be so busy wizz'n on everthing he'll forget all about digging .
