Complaint or Symptom :
Low hour performance issues: hard starting, white smoke, low power & rough running on 3029 or 4045 with mechanical fuel systems and Stanadyne DB2 / DB4 pump.
For units that exhibit the above symptoms but NOT low power see DTAC solution 89226
Problem or Situation :
Performance issues: white smoke, hard starting, low power & rough running on 3029 or 4045 with mechanical fuel systems.
Solution :
Perform the diagnostic steps as described in “observable diagnostics in test” section titled “Engine Does Not Develop Full Power.” Boost Pressure Specification are also found in the CTM.
4045 Engines refer to CTM207
3029 Engines refer to CTM125
If the diagnostic steps lead to the recommendation of taking the injection pump to an Authorized Diesel Shop (ADS) Repair Facility and the symptoms are corrected, please open a Report Only DTAC Case and report the injection pump serial number and the list of components repaired or replaced by the ADS.

Solution Summary: HPCR Fuel System Clean Up Procedure Using the Injector Flush Tool
Publication Date: Dec 22 2010
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
**Paper copies of solutions may not be the most current solutions**
Complaint or Symptom :
HPCR Fuel System Clean Up Procedure using the Injector Flush Tool SW10015JD, Diesel Fuel System Clean Up TY26861 or MCTY26688 in Region 2, and Injector Flush Tool Filters SW10967P1. Replacement red and black flush hoses SW00889. Replacement flush tool seal kit SW00890.
Problem or Situation :
Procedure not in CTM for Fuel System Clean Up
Solution :
Reference DTAC Solution 82072 for full diagnostic recommendations related to the use of the Injector Flush Tool.
The Injector Flush Tool and Clean Up product will take the place of the vehicle/on-board fuel source. The circulation of the Clean Up product through the high pressure system breaks up and removes harmful deposits. For best results, the engine should be brought to operating temperature before starting the following procedure.
Instructions for use of the Injector Flush Tool and Diesel Fuel System Clean Up:
1. Change primary and secondary fuel filters.
2. Prime fuel system and start engine.
IMPORTANT: If the engine meets Interim Tier 4 / Stage IIIB emissions regulations then it has an aftertreatment device. Disable Exhaust Filter Cleaning on the monitor while performing the fuel system clean up.
3. Run engine long enough to get to operating temperature.
4. Shut down engine.
5. Disconnect fuel supply to primary fuel filter.
6. Connect 6 ft (1.8 m) red hose (supply) to primary filter using appropriate adapter in kit.
7. Disconnect fuel return to fuel tank.
8. Connect 6 ft (1.8 m) black hose (return) to tank line using appropriate adapter in kit.
9. Connect other end of red 6 ft (1.8 m) hose to bottom fitting of flush tank. Open valve on tank.
10. Connect other end of black 6 ft (1.8 m) to return side of flush tank so that return fuel flows through flush kit filter.
11. Fill reservoir with full contents of flush solvent.
12. Key on to check for leaks and verify return fuel is coming back to flush tool. If flush tank fuel level drops quickly shut off and check to make sure all of return fuel is getting back to the tool reservoir.
13. Start engine and run at 1100 rpm. While flush is running, conduct three sets of three full throttle snaps. Once at 5, 10, and 15 minutes into cleaning. This will increase system pressure and can tend to break loose a sticky injector.
14. Run the engine until the Diesel Fuel Clean Up product is almost entirely consumed. This will typically take between 20 and 40 minutes. Watch for fuel to get to bottom of warning decal. Do not let engine starve of fuel source or die.
15. Shut engine down.
16. Inspect return filter for debris
17. If the filter is heavy with debris and/or engine performance was not restored following Step 14, install a new filter in the tool and perform the flush again.
18. Reconnect engine fuel system to vehicle/on-board fuel tank.
19. Start engine and check for leaks. Run engine 10-15 minutes at idle to purge cleaner from fuel system.

Additional Information:
Following this fuel system cleaning, it is recommended that John Deere Fuel-Protect Keep Clean fuel additive be used as a long term maintenance product. This additive will help prevent the deposits from re-forming in the high pressure fuel system. For stubborn deposits that may not clean up with one flush, a second or third set can be run. Or, running the John Deere Keep Clean additive at the cleaning treat rate for 3-5 days of working. See the following parts bulletin or the DTAC solution below. SPECIAL NOTE: Do not rely on parts inventory screen to determine availability of either flush tool or solvent. These are drop shipped directly from the supplier and not through typical parts distribution channels. Thus inventory records are not accurate. This issue is currently being addressed by John Deere.
